Tired of ordinary wine content? A laggard contemplates hosting a podcast
I am often asked if I have a podcast. I don’t, but do think about it.
Sharing stories about the people and places responsible for the wine in our glasses is what excites me. I prefer writing profiles and features over tasting notes.
But tasting notes move the needle. Most wine communication today is effectively shopping lists. Individual reviews or a collection of wines along a selected theme. It’s service journalism aka “news you can use.”
In the early days of VINES Magazine, the Canadian wine and lifestyle publication I co-founded, I often appeared on Linda Bramble’s radio show on 1220 CHSC and would guest host when she was travelling. It’s a great medium for conversations about news, events and ideas. (A very different take on radio broadcasting from my campus radio days at CKMS in Waterloo and CKDU in Halifax.)
Occasionally, Terry David Mulligan would reach out to have me on his longstanding program, Tasting Room Radio, which is also packaged as a podcast and YouTube channel. Back in 2023, Mulligan turned an interview I did with his colleagues in the wine brand Q&A, Jason Priestley and Michal Mosny, into an episode.
It was freewheeling conversation about wine and the stuff that surrounds it. Orchestrating that kind of a program would be fun.
So, what’s stopping me? Time to create and manage something I would be proud to put out into the world of wine and confusion about technology and equipment mostly. Excuses that are easy enough to overcome should I decide to be the world’s last adopter of podcasting.
